Grammar in the 21st Century

Grammar. You may know it as the boring part of English class. My first memories of English are of my seventh grade teacher standing at the overhead projector going over how to diagram a sentence and later when we had to memorize prepositions. These were my least favorite things to learn. However, as an English Teacher and a Writing Instructor, I find that grammar is extremely important. In fact, grammar may be the most important part of what I do on a daily basis. The question I'd like to consider today is this: Why is grammar important to our daily lives? Why is it important to have good grammar in the 21st Century, which seems to have developed an entirely "new" language (texting abbreviations and slang)? Please comment on this post with an answer that uses examples from your life or someone you know. Oh, one last thing: please use proper grammar in your response (this time it's a requirement from your teacher).
